AMONG A HERD OF DEER IN THE WATER
By S. C. Turnbo

Lige Motley, the well known hunter in the pioneer days of Marion County, Ark., tells of himself and Ed Duggins going fire hunting down White River one night in a canoe and got among a bunch of 75 deer that was in the shoal water at the mouth of Bruce’s Creek. We let the canoe drift down among the deer and it was an interesting scene to view their beautiful forms and shining eyeballs all around us. Before we got down from among them we shot one of the deer and it sank down into the water. The report of the rifle frightened the remaining herd and as they left they made a loud noise splash-ing in the water as they ran to shore.
