COUNTING DEER TRACKS

We have mentioned elsewhere the old Henry Clark farm which is situated on the flat between Big Buck Creek and the Pond Hollow. This land is in the southeast part of Taney County, Mo., some three miles and a half southeast of Protem. This farm was settled by John Jones in the month of February, 1858. R. M. Jones, or Uncle Rufe as he was commonly known and who was a son of John Jones, said that one day in the late fall of 1857 he and his father rode over this flat to look at the land with a view of settling it. The great tall dry grass had been swept by fire only a few days before this and a recent heavy rain had fell without being followed by cold and the top of the ground was soft and muddy in places and while they were passing on the part of the flat just south of the residence where Mrs. Nancy Elizabeth Clark died February 13, 1907, they saw a bunch of deer running east across the flat. They could not count the deer but they counted the tracks that the deer made while passing over the flat and according to the number of tracks there were more than 50 deer in the herd."
