HE WAS GLAD TO GET RID OF THE WOLVES
By S. C. Turnbo

Capt. J. H. Sallee relates the following account of how he was attacked once by a howling pack of wolves. "One dark night," said he "while I was returning home on horseback from a hunting tour I was carrying a lot of fresh meat. My clothes were bloody and the horse’s hair was saturated with blood in spots. I was living on Pond Fork in Ozark County, Mo. Wild game was abundant then and there were plenty of wolves too. On that night as I was nearing home I was suddenly attacked by a gang of wolves. I do not know how many but I suppose there were 8 or 10 of them more or less. They followed me close and howled viciously for several hundred yards. I thought at times they would leap on my horse and attempt to pull me off him. I was certainly soared and urged my horse along as fast as he would go. Their snarls, whining and howling as they pursued me filled the night air with a dismal and hideous noise. I stopped twice to reach for the limb of a tree to pull myself up off of the horse out of danger and let the horse run the gauntlet if he could, but I would change my mind and urge him on again. Before I reached my house the wolves let up and fell back behind me so far that they relieved me of danger and I felt like I had began life anew.
