MADE HIS WIFE A PAIR OF SHOES OUT OF THE HIDE OF A CATAMOUNT
By S. C. Turnbo
Mr. George Trammel, an early resident of Crooked Creek in Boone County, Ark., said that he took but small interest in hunting, but said he, "I remember a large vicious catamount once that the dogs had treed. The beast was so savage that it threatened to spring on me from the tree. When I shot it the bullet passed into its left ear and came out at the right eye, yet it hung to the limb of the tree a minute or more before it released its hold and fell, and after it struck the ground it was able to fight the dogs in a feeble way for a short time before it died. I removed the hide and prepared it for the tan trough and converted it into leather like tanning a beef hide, and made my wife a pair of shoes out of it, which was the only pair of shoes I ever knew to be made out of the hide of a catamount.
