HOW A WOLF GOT FASTENED UP IN THE SMOKEHOUSE
By S. C. Turnbo

We have mentioned the River Bill Coker farm on White River on several occasions. This land is in Crocket township in Marion County, Ark. It is known now as Alex Pruitt’s lower place. We have said that Jake Nave lived here awhile and after he sold it to his brother-in-law, "River" Bill Coker, the latter with the help of his negro slaves opened up a fine farm in this fertile bottom. Jake Nave, after leaving here, went up the river a few miles and opened up a nice farm on the north side of the river. This bottom is known now as the Jake Nave Bend. Nave also put up a blacksmith shop and worked in it until he killed George Coker. A few days after he had vacated the River Bill Coker place and before Mr. Coker moved there, Mr. Nave returned back to the cabin for something he had forgotten and was amazed at finding a wolf fastened up in the smokehouse which was a small log building. The door was a self latcher and had been closed but not latched and the wolf had come along and pushed the door open and went in and the door shutter closed and latched itself and the wolf was a prisoner. Nave shot it with his rifle and pulled it out of the hut.
