HE SUPPOSED THE YELLOW WOLF WAS A YELLOW DOG AND SET
THE ANIMAL FREE
By S. C. Turnbo
Here is a short story of catching wolves in pentraps in Franklin County,
Mo., which was given me by Henry Clasby, son of Jim and Polly Ann (Potter)
Clasby, who were early settlers in Franklin. Henry Clasby was born in Franklin
County but his parents moved into Pulaski County when Henry was just 6 months
old. His parents both died on the 14th of February but their deaths occurred
3 years apart. Both rest in the Seton graveyard, Pulaski County. Mr. Clasby
said that his father informed him that while he lived in Franklin County,
himself and others built a few pen traps of logs and caught a number of
gray and black timber wolves. My father said that one day he visited one
of the pens alone and seen a yellow animal in a pen. As he never had seen
a yellow wolf he thought it a yellow dog that had got caught and thinking
it belonged to one of his neighbors he raised the trap immediately and set
it free. As soon as the beast regained its liberty it ran off as fast as
it could go and it was now that my father discovered his mistake. He always
remembered afterward that there were yellow colored wolves as well as black
and gray ones."
