NATURALIZATION RECORDS IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES
The General Branch, Civil Archives Division has naturalization proceedings of the District of Columbia courts, 1802-1926. These records show, for each person who petitioned for naturalization, his age or date of birth, his nationality, and whether citizenship was granted. The National Archives has photocopies and indexes of naturalization documents, 1787-1906, filed by courts in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island. These records were copied and indexed by the Work Projects Administration in the late 1930's. The General Branch, Civil Archives Division and the National Archives will search these records for information about naturalizations that occurred before September 27, 1906, if given the full name of the petitioner and the approximate date of naturalization. Persons who wish information about citizenship granted elsewhere before September 27, 1906, should send their inquiries to the clerk of the Federal, State, or other court that issued the naturalization certificates.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service, Washington, D.C. 20536, has duplicate records of all naturalizations that occurred after September 26, 1906. Inquiries about citizenship granted after that date should be sent to the Service on a form that can be obtained from any of the Service's district offices. Local postmasters will give the address of the nearest district office.
