The public is invited dispose of their unused prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines and vape cartridges at the Library Center, 4653 S. Campbell Ave., or the Strafford Branch Library, 101 Mo. 125, Strafford. Designated individuals will take possession of the drugs outside the library.

The one-day event is part of National Prescription Drug Take Back Day sponsored by the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Medicines can also be dropped off at Smith-Glynn-Callaway Clinic, 3231 S. National Ave.; and Alps Pharmacy, 2650 W. Kearney St., Suite 116.

The Springfield event is sponsored by the DREAM Coalition, Community Partnership of the Ozarks and multiple area partners.

The DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day provides an opportunity for Americans to prevent drug addiction and overdose deaths.

According to the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.7 million people misused prescription pain relievers, 4.9 million people misused prescription stimulants, and 5.9 million people misused prescription tranquilizers or sedatives in 2019. The survey also showed that a majority of misused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet.
